Moyale to Mazerabit 04 March 2007

I guess that there were ominous signs late on Saturday night when we pressed on through a remote reserve in southern Ethiopia to reach Moyale. We had broken the first rule of Good Riding in Africa when dusk fell at around 6:30 pm and we still had an hour of riding to reach the Moyale that is Ethiopia as the town straddles both sides of the border.

We rode on in the dark encouraged on our way by the bright mirror eyes and then as full view came to vision of the brazen drooling Hyenas that did a little circle of disappointment dance as we passed them onto the next round light of eyes to be repeated again. We had not seen a vehicle or human being for over a hundred Km after Jim in front rode through a rope barrier across the road in the dying evening light on entry to the reserve. He later said that he didn't see it until it was too late and as he looked back he saw that the guards only had a bicycle and were unlikely to catch up with us !!
